Cuesta Coaches Reach Milestones En Route to Victory

Three Cuesta College Coaches have achieved new career milestones for the Cougars.  Softball Coach Jenel Guadagno, Baseball Coach Bob Miller and Men's Basketball Coach Rusty Blair have all achieved new coaching milestones during the 2023-24 school year.

Softball Coach Jenel Guadagno collected her 100th career win yesterday with an exclamation point.  Her Cougars won on the road against local rival Allan Hancock with a five-inning, run-rule demolition, 11-0.  Guadagno has rebuilt a program that went through seven coaches in ten seasons before she came on board.  She has posted four winning seasons over the past five years and is chasing the program's first playoff berth since 2015 and its first conference title since 2008.

Cuesta Baseball Coach Bob Miller earned his 500th victory, after completing a three-game sweep over Los Angeles Pierce with an 11-inning triumph, 9-8, on March 16.  Two years ago, Miller ended the season tied with former Coach Larry Lee with exactly 460 career wins as Cuesta Baseball's winningest coaches, but he quickly blew past that mark with back-to-back conference titles and hit the 500-mark less than two years later.  Amid his 22nd season at the helm, Miller's record at Cuesta is 508-339-3.  His Cougars are currently 23-7 and battling for their 11th Western State Conference title and 18th playoff berth under his leadership.

Of course, all of Cuesta's coaches are all looking up to 6'10" Men's Basketball Coach Rusty Blair, who sits atop the mountain.  This season, Coach Blair and his Cougars passed Hall of Fame Men's Water Polo Coach Terry Bowen for the most victories in Cuesta Athletics History. Bowen mentored the Cuesta Men's Water Polo team for a quarter-century and, among his 19 conference titles and 25 consecutive playoff berths, compiled a 556-238-16 record.  Blair's Cuesta Cagers finished his 31st season at the helm with a rare losing record for a coach that owns a career .577 winning percentage and boasts 19 trips to the playoffs. The Cougars finished in 4th place in the Western State Conference and posted an 11-17 record, but also put Blair three wins ahead of Bowen at 559-423.

At the other end of the spectrum, Coach Greg Enloe took over the men's water polo program and began adding to the win total of Cuesta College's most successful sport.  Enloe led the Cougars to a conference title and 3rd place at the 2023 CCCAA State Tournament, while getting credit for 23 wins.  Coach Whitney Meyer, who has led Women's Volleyball for seven seasons, picked up the first win for Cuesta's newest sport, Beach Volleyball, against Marin on February 23.  The first-year program currently stands at 3-11.  Additionally, Women's Soccer Coach Kaleb Lique Naitove earned a spot-on the all-time win list, when his Kickers beat DeAnza, 2-1, back on September 15 for their first win with him on sidelines.
