Cuesta College Athletics Department is proud to announce this month's selections for the Cuesta Athlete of the Month. This distinct honor recognizes two Cuesta College Athletes each month during the school year who have performed to the highest standards in their sport. Our male selection for September is Harrier Luis Cervantes.
Returning Freshman Luis Cervantes has been the Cougars' leading harrier this season. He has been the Cougars' top finisher in all three races the first month of the season. Cervantes opened the campaign leading the Cougars with a medal-winning (Top 15) performance at the 2021 Tour de Cuesta. He finished 12th in the race and covered the challenging Cuesta Fairbanks Course in only 23:43.3. A week later he paced the Cougars with a 39th place finish at the Fresno Invitational. His time of 22:46.5 placed him well into the top half of the massive field. Cervantes closed out the month demonstrating his constant upward swing. He led Cuesta to the overall victory, while leading the men to 4th place as a team, at the Bakersfield Invitational. His time of 22:17put him at the top of the 40-man field and edged teammate Jordan Reilly, who finished eight seconds behind him and in 2nd place.
Cuesta Men's Cross Country begins its Western State Conference schedule in October and expects to compete in the regional and state finals in November.
