Beach Wins at the Top, but Falls at Monterey, 4-1

Beach Volleyball is finding its way in its first season and Coach Whitney Meyer is guiding the program through a schedule that was only announced two months before competition began.  Last week the Cougars fell to 0-6 on the season with a loss at Monterey Peninsula, 4-1, but once again, in defeat the Cougars' showed progress.  The Cougars #1-pair of Bailey Woodside and Raina Clifton won their first match of the season by beating the Lobos' top squad of Elle Mitchell and Lydia Schwerner in straight sets, 21-18, 21-17.  Although the victory was the Cougars' sole triumph as the day, as the rest of the ladder was swept, it demonstrated the Cougars could win against the Lobos' best.  Unfortunately, the rest of the team fell in straight sets by a total combined score of 168-86.  Woodside and Clifton's victory marks the Cougars third pairs victory of the season, trailing this week's #3 pairing of Madelyn Freeman and Amelie Lo Jocano, who own the other two.

Cuesta's "Sand Spikers" return to action this Friday (11/12 PM) with a doubleheader with Gavilan and Marin in Gilroy.  The Cougars open against the Mariners and face the host Rams in the nightcap.
