Cougars' Victory Evens Season Series With Bulldogs, 11-5

Cuesta Baseball evened its season series with local rival Allan Hancock with a victory, 11-5, in the fourth and final game of the series.  The Cougars and Bulldogs each won two of their four games; although Cuesta did outscore their rivals during the series, 44-35.  Today, Cuesta took an early lead on Cuesta Clean-up Hitter Zach Tallerman's (pict) Grand Slam in the 1st inning.  Tallerman's clout was all Cuesta Starting Pitcher Ben Broughton needed to earn his seventh win of the season.  Allan Hancock went hitless over the first two frames, but Leadoff Hitter Jacob Steels opened their second swing through the line-up with a solo Home Run to break up the no-hitter and get the Bulldogs on the scoreboard.  Hancock cut the Cougars' lead in half with another run in the 4th inning, but Cuesta outscored the Bulldogs, 7-3, the rest of the way.  Broughton allowed only two earned runs and scattered six hits over eight innings before handing the game to the Bullpen to secure his triumph.  On offense, Tallerman added to his blast with a Double later in the game, while Leftfielder Ethan Royal bookended his first inning Home Run with a two-run shot in the Cougars' final turn at the plate.  Royal ended the day 2-for-3 with three runs scored and two drive in.   Today's victory gave the Cougars a three-game lead in the Western State Conference Standings with five games remaining in the season.  The 25th-ranked Cougars improved to 22-13 overall and lead the WSC with a 15-4 record against the circuit, however they are only halfway through their week. The Cougars play at Santa Barbara on Friday (2:30) and in Woodland Hills, against Pierce, on Saturday (1 PM).
