Baseball Earns 7th-seed In CCCAA Playoffs, Hosts El Camino this Weekend

Cuesta Baseball rebounded from a pair of COVID-shortened to seasons to claim the program's 18th Western State Conference title, since joining the circuit in 1983.  The Cougars also earned a playoff berth for the 16th time during Coach Bob Miller's 20-year tenure.  The Cougars are currently 25-15 on the season and Miller climbed to the top of the Cuesta's all-time ranks.  The Cougars' victory at Santa Barbara City on Saturday earned them the WSC title outright and tied Coach Miller with Larry Lee, current Cal Poly Coach, for the program's all-time lead in both overall wins (460) and conference titles (9) at Cuesta.

This week the 7th-seeded Cougars host #10 El Camino this Friday and Saturday for a best-of three CCCAA Playoff Series.  The Warriors finished 3rd in the South Coast Conference and join the WSC Champion Cougars this weekend.  The series opens on Friday (2 PM) and the action returns on Saturday for Game 2 (11 AM), with a chance for Game 3 (3 PM), if needed.  Cuesta and El Camino had four opponents in common this season (#11 Cypress, #13 Santa Barbara, Orange Coast, Cerritos), where the Warriors outperformed the Cougars, 8-2 to 3-6.  Over their playoff history, the two foes have met three times in the post-season for eight games, with the Cougars holding a 6-2 advantage.  In 1999, #1-seeded Cuesta hosted the Warriors, but needed three games to get past #16 El Camino.  The two teams also met the next year for a playoff series, with Cuesta taking both games to advance.  In their last playoff meeting in 2003, the 4th-seeded Warriors were upset by the Cougars in Torrance.  They split the first two games, but Cuesta took the rubber matched and advanced to the CCCAA Regional Finals against eventual State Champion Riverside.
