Baseball Nabs WSC Crown and the Loop's Top Playoff Seed, Host LA Valley this Weekend

Baseball won four of its final five games of the season to tie Santa Barbara City for the 2023 Western State Conference title.  The title marks the program's second in a row and 10th title under Coach Bob Miller, as well as the program's 20th overall since 1982.  The Cougars finished strong by winning all three of their contests during the final week of the season.  Cuesta opened last week at home, where they knocked off Pierce, 7-5, and Moorpark, 8-2, but had to travel to Oxnard to clinch the title with a one-run victory, 4-3, on the final day of the season.  The Condors scored all of their runs in the 3rd inning, but Starter Luigi Albano-Dito faced only two batters over the minimum for the rest of the game as he improved to 5-1 on the year.  Reliever Robinson Lardner also closed out the last four outs of Albano-Dito's victory to earn his team-leading third save.   The Cougars finished the regular season with a 24-14-1 overall record and claimed a piece of the WSC Crown with a 17-7 mark against the circuit.

Returning WSC Player of the Year Zachary Tallerman connected for his 28th career double in the victory over Oxnard and moved into 9th place on Cuesta's all-time Top 10. He remains behind 1997 WSC MVP Ryan Merkle's (1996-97) record of 37 bingles, while also ranking 8th in career triples (5) and 3rd in home runs (18).  Tallerman joins Merkle and their fellow WSC MVP David Lamar (2002-03) as the only three players to acheive a spot on Cuesta's all-time Top 10 lists for doubles, triples and home runs.

The Cougars, the highest seeded team from the WSC-North, earned the 8th-seed in the 2023 CCCAA Regional Playoffs and host #17-seed Los Angeles Valley for a best-of-three series this weekend in SLO.  The Cougars and Monarchs open on Friday (2 PM) and play Game 2 and 3, if needed, on Saturday starting at 11 AM.  The visiting Monarchs finished 2nd in the Western State Conference South Division with a 23-17 overall record.

Due to being a CCCAA-sponsored Regional Playoff the prices are General Admission $12, Students/Staff/Seniors/Children $8.
