2022-23 Cuesta College Outstanding Male Athlete of the Year- Zachary Tallerman
In 2003 the Cuesta Athletic Department instituted its first true Athlete of the Year Award. The coaching staff was encouraged to nominate their best athlete and a committee was created to weigh performance athletic as the highest criteria. Today Cuesta announced its Outstanding Athletes of the Year for the twenty-first time. The 2022-23 Cuesta Outstanding Male Athlete of the Year is second-year Baseball Star Zachary Tallerman (Berkeley HS).
Two-time CCCAA All-State selection Zachary Tallerman spent the past two seasons at the corner of the Cougars' infield and in the middle of their batting order, while leading the program to back-to-back Western State Confernece titles and CCCAA Playoff berths. This season, Tallerman moved across the from Third Base to First Base, but remained anchored in the "clean-up" spot in their batting order, where he solidified his postion as one of the program's great power hitters. He led the team with a .367 batting average, while leading the team with 20 extra-base hits, including a team-high nine home runs. Tallerman ranks in the Cougars' all time Top 10 for both career Doubles (28), Home Runs (18) and, Runs Batted In (98). Of course, opposing teams were aware of the damage the returning All-State player could inflict, so this season he also drew a team-high 37 walks to help him post a .500 on-base percentage, which is the 7th best in team history. Tallerman is one of only four two-time All-State players at Cuesta and was also twice an unanimous all-Western State Conference First Team selection, including player of the year honors in 2022.
