Cougars Beat Merced, Before the Rain, 4-2

Cuesta Baseball completed their sweep of the three-day, three-game Cuesta/Hancock Spring Break Tournament with a win over Merced, 4-2.  Despite the Cougars' offense posting its lowest scoring game of the month and first homer-less game in ten days, the Cougars held off the Blue Devils and beat the rain.  Cuesta got to work early with Diego Murillo's leadoff Double in the 1st inning, which turned into the game's first run two batters later with Jack Clothier's RBI-single.  Cuesta added two more runs the next inning on a trio of walks, an error, and Murillo's Sacrifice Fly.  In the 4th inning Murillo scored again to give the Cougars some breathing room.  He reached on a fielder's choice and was plated on the next play by Makani Nabarro's Double.  Cuesta did not score the rest of the game, but was able to absorb a pinch hit, two-run home run by Merced's AJ Villa on their way to victory.  The Cougars used three pitchers in the game, with Relievers Carson Tanner and Andrew Seibert (pict) earning the win and the save, respectively.  Cuesta Outfielder Jack Clothier led all hitters with three hits in the game, while the Blue Devils' Jacob Reyes was the only other player to enjoy a multi-hit game.  The victory improved the Cougars' record to 21-7 on the season.

The Cougars continue their break from Western State Conference play next week and will play a two-game set against Porterville.  Cuesta will travel to Porterville to play the Pirates on Tuesday (2 PM) and host the Bucs in SLO on WEDNESDAY (2 PM).  The Cougars shall begin their final swing through the Western State Conference starting on Tuesday, April 9.
