Cuesta College Athletics Department is proud to announce this month's selections for the Cuesta Athlete of the Month. This distinct honor recognizes two Cuesta College Athletes each month during the school year who have performed to the highest standards in their sport. Our male selection for January is Cager Japjit Gill.
Point Guard Japjit Gill drives the Cougars offense and makes an impact in every facet of the game. On the season, he is averaging 8.2 points, 5.2 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game, but he stepped up his game during January for the first half of Western State Conference play. In four games against the loop, he is averaging 13.0 points, 6.3 rebounds and 5.8 assists per game. He enjoyed his finest game of the season in the Cougars' overtime win over Moorpark on January 22. Gill, after scoring a three-pointer at the end of regulation to force overtime, finished the game with a then season-best 19 points, seven rebounds, three assists and three steals. He scored his current career-high 20 points four days later against Ventura.
Cuesta Men's Basketball is only 9-12 on the season, however the Cougars have won six of their past seven games, including a 4-1 record against the WSC. Cuesta has reached the playoffs in 11 of the past 14 seasons and, if they stay hot, should continue the 2021-22 season into March.
