Men's Basketball Falls to Coalinga in Home Opener, 71-63

Men's Basketball fell to 0-2 after losing to West Hills-Coalinga, 71-63, just five days after dropping an overtime game at West Hills-Lemoore.  The Cougars are projected as a playoff team this year but are a team that relies on the three-point shot, however tonight the shots did not fall.  The Cougars were 11-for-36 from beyond the arch, while the Falcons pounded the ball inside to score 58 of their 71 points, which included 18 trips to the free throw line.  The Cougars sent up 36 shots from beyond the bonus area, compared to only 24 two-point chances and just four free throws.  2023 All-WSC First Team Guard Drew Ardouin led all scorers 19 points, while Freshmen Guards Stevie Waiters and Luis Cerqueiraeach added 14 more points for Cuesta.  Sophomores Ahmadou Aw and Devion Edwards both posted double-doubles to lead Coalinga. Edwards matched his ten rebounds with a team-high 16 points, while Aw added 13 points and collected 11 caroms, which tied Cuesta's TJ Maveety (pict) for the game-high.

Cuesta is back in action with the 54th Hinsons Tire Pros Winter Classic this weekend.  The Cougars and local rival Allan Hancock will join Cuesta's women's team for a basketball tripleheader on both nights, with the men's team playing the finale each night.  On Friday (7 PM) the Cougars play Gavilan, while Allan Hancock faces Sequoias, and they shall swap partners with the Bulldogs to close the tournament against Sequoias on Saturday (5 PM).
