Men's Swimming Crushes Ventura and Allan Hancock in Tri-Meet

Cuesta Men's Swimming scored 104 points to drown both Ventura, 64 points, and Allan Hancock, 27 points, in their Western State Conference Tri-Meet.  The Cougars won 12 of 21 events on the day, including three trips to the top of the podium by Freshman Lucas Esenwein (pict).   Esenwein made sure today was an historic day in his first event.  Last week he tied Two-time State Champion Jeff Dacus's 1999 school record in the 50-freestyle (:20.86), the sports premier event, and today he broke that record.  His time of :20.81, in an event often determined by margins within a few tenths of second, was nearly 1.5 seconds ahead of second place. Esenwein, of course, was not done on the day.  He also won both the 100-freestyle (:46.98) and 200-freestyle (1:48.19) to complete his freestyle sweep.  Fellow Freshman Kiran Heidler showed his versatility to collect two more Cuesta events titles.  Heidler followed Esenwein's record breaking performance by winning the 200-backstroke (2:07.97) and later claimed the 100-butterfly (:54.53).  The Cougars also received a victory from 2019 All American Satoshi Shinkawa in the 200-indvidual medley (2:03.52) and demonstrated the team's considerable depth with event wins from Layne Porter (100-backstroke, :56.21), Jacob Sill (50-breaststroke, :31.13) and Eric Klang (100 IM, :58.89).

Coming Up- The Cougars shall continue to train hard, before beginning a short taper before the 2021 Western State Conference Championship on May 22.  The WSC Championship, like the Cougars' two previous mini meets, shall also be held at Cuesta College.
