Cuesta Aquatics Hosts the WSC Swim & Dive Championships this Weekend

Cuesta Swimming hosts the 2022 Western State Conference Championships this Thursday thru Saturday.  Ten teams in the WSC circuit will all be vying for the conference crown, while also giving their swimmers the best, and final, chance to qualify for the 2022 CCCAA State Championships in East LA on May-5-7.   Both Cuesta teams enter this weekend as the defending WSC Champions from 2021, while the men also won the title in 2019, before the pandemic cancelled the 2020 campaign.

Cuesta Men's Swimming is undefeated this season and has its sights set on both the program's 17th WSC crown and getting as many swimmers into the CCCAA State Meet.  The men's team has finished as the State Runner-up three times in the program's history and is poised to bring home Cuesta College's first CCCAA State Championship for aquatics, as well as the college's first since Women's Volleyball won back-to-back crowns in 1985 and 1986.  2021 Cuesta College Athlete of the Year Lucas Esenwein, who won four individual events at last season's WSC Finals, leads the team.  He holds the Cuesta Record in the 50-freestyle, which gives him claim to the title of "Fastest Cougar Ever", as well as four other Cuesta All Time Top 10 marks.  He is joined by versatile twins Stash Perry and Ethan Perry, who own five more Top 10 marks, including the top two marks in the 100-Individual Medley.   Multi-talented Andrew Lopez and 50-Butterfly Record Holder Ethan Blum lead the rest of a deep team that should enjoy home tank advantage.  The Cougars plan to bring home the conference crown and send a big contingent to the CCCAA State Championships.

Cuesta Women's Swimming does not boast the same depth as the men's team, but the small and mighty squad is loaded with talent.  The six-woman team has set two new Cuesta records this season and boasts seven new Cuesta Top 10 marks from four different swimmers.  It will be interesting to see if the bigger meet works to the small and talented Cougars advantage, however all six members should score in all of their individual events and the relays.  Cuesta is especially focused on getting their relays to State, as well as earning high seeds for potential CCCAA State Finalists Meghan Abbott and Anna Kreowski.  Abbott is also the WSC's defending champion in the 500-freestyle.
