Marsh Honored as Cuesta College’s Coach of the Year

Men's Swim & Dive Coach John Marsh has been recognized as the 2021-22 Cuesta College Coach of the Year. This year marks the fourth time Coach Marsh has been honored as Cuesta College Coach of the Year, however it is also the third time he has won for men's swimming. Marsh, a three-sport coach for Cuesta, also won the award for men's swim and dive in both 2013 and 2018, as well as men's water polo in 2020.  His third win for men's swimming now ties him with Wrestling Coach Joe Dansby for most wins in a sport, but he also holds the record for the most awards overall.  This year Marsh was his own biggest competition as he scored the most points in all three of his sports to sweep the competition. It should also be noted that Cuesta's coaching staff posted a combined 334 coaching points this school year to break the previous standard of 247 in 2012.   Marsh also led the women's swim team to 3rd place at the 2022 State Championships and was named CCCAA State Coach of the year, but back in the Fall he also led men's water polo to a conference title and the regional semi-final, while earning conference coach of the year honors.  This is the sixth time the Western State Conference has recognized Coach Marsh for water polo and the eleventh time overall, including three times for women's swim and dive and twice for men's swim and dive.

Men's Swimming's 3rd place finish at the 2022 CCCAA State Championship marked their highest team finish in twenty years. The Cougars did not claim an event at the meet but scored in 17 of the 18 individual swimming events, while also reaching the championship finals in 14.  The Cougars team Bronze at the State Championship marked the only meet they did not win this season.  The Cougars broke nine individual records this season and boasted five All Americans on the squad.

This award recognizes the highest level of coaching achieved at Cuesta College during a year of competition. It was first officially presented in 2009. The award is based on a mathematical formula that weighs a coach's individual performance as well as the on-field success of his/her team.
