Men's Track and Field Sends Talented Trio to CCCAA Regional Finals

Men's Track and Field Sends Talented Trio to CCCAA Regional Finals

Men's Track and Field shall advance three athletes to the 2023 CCCAA Southern Regional Finals this week in San Diego.  Sophomore Steepler Axel Reich shall be joined by a pair of freshman, Harrier Anthony Erikson (pict) and Vaulter Kevin Sweeney

This is Reich's first trip to the Regional Finals, after ending his freshman season in the prelims.  He has been a machine this season and has dropped 45 seconds off his 2022 time and became the 10th Steepler in Cuesta History to break the 10-minute barrier.  Reich is the 12th-seed this weekend.  Erikson is a talented runner and is looking to book his second trip to a State Meet this year.  He finished 44th at the 2022 CCCAA State Cross Country Championships, after peaking at the season-ending championship events. He has also been making huge drops in track, including 13 seconds off his season-opening 1,500m time and another 20 seconds in the 5,000m.  It would not be a surprise to see him shed more time this weekend and advance to the State Meet.  Sweeney is another athlete that had slow start to the season.  He did not compete in his first meet until the final week of March, however since then he has been steadily flying higher in the pole vault.  He earned all-Western State Conference honors in his third meet and has a chance to reach the CCCAA State Meet after his 4th.  Sweeney's cleared 13-feet for the first-time last weekend, however his big leap of 13-5.25 not only left him in an 11-way tie for 2nd highest jump in the region, but also 12th place overall due to misses at lower heights.
