Cuesta Track & Field Prepares to Host WSC North Meet

Cuesta Track & Field will host its only home event of the season this Friday with the 2024 Western State Conference North Meet.  The event shall feature the Northern most school of the 16-college Western State Conference.  Of course, the host Cougars boast the highest latitude in a circuit that spans almost 200 miles.  The events are set to start at 10 AM.

Last week the Cougars travelled to Ventura for the Western State Conference Relays.  The non-scoring meet served as the Cougars' final warm-up for their first scoring meet, which begins with the WSC North Meet in SLO.  The men's team post five victories in the 20-event meet, while also adding a silver and a trio of bronze medals.  Decathlete Joseph Tugwell won the Javelin (129-7), Hurdler Gal Rivlin claimed the 400-hurdles (:59.67), Leaper Dylan Ervin took the Triple Jump (40-4), while Pole Vaulter Owen Arreguy cleared 14-1.25 to win the pole vault, before joining Kainoa Carrera, Cal Corn and Trevor Parsons to claim the 4x200 Relay (1:33.98).  Arreguy's win in the pole vault put him past his teammate and Runner-up Kevin Sweeney, who cleared 13-5.25 for the team's lone Silver.  Tugwell, Ervin and Rivlin also joined William Dawes for 3rd place in the 4x400 Relay (3:32.30). Freshman Heath Jones rounded out the Cougars' medalist with Third place in the 110-hurdles (:19.28)

On the women's side, Cuesta cleaned up in the relays, jumps and throws for a total four wins, seven silvers and three bronzes.  Cuesta Record Holder Madeline Scovil led the way with a win in the Triple Jump (35-5.25), just ahead of teammate Leah Miller, who scored the Silver (29-6). Scovil also grabbed a Silver in the Long Jump (17-1.5).  In the High Jump, All-State HighJumper Grace Gutierrez took second (5-1), while teammate Rian Huffman was two inches back in third place.  In the Throws, Heptathlete Savannah Shoemaker took second in both the Shot Put (34-3.5) and javelin (103-9), while Harper Clark collected a 3rd in both the Hammer (89-4) and Discus (99-5).  In the relays, the Cougars won the 4x400, 4x800 and the Spring Medley, while also earning a Runner-up finish in the 4x400 and the Distance Medley, before grapping a Bronze in the 4x100.
