In 2002 the Cuesta Athletic Department established and named the Warren Hansen Scholar-Athlete Award in recognition of former Cuesta Athletic Director Warren Hansen's 36-year commitment to academic excellence. A student must maintain a 3.5 GPA and is also nominated on basis of their citizenship and athletic performance. This year's winner of the Male Warren Hansen Scholar-Athlete Award is all-American Center Jacob Sill (Clovis).
Jacob Sill has been an exemplary student-athlete over his three years at Cuesta and, as the recipient of the 2021-22 Warren Hansen Scholar-Athlete of the Year, has reached the highest achievement in both academics and athletics. In his first semester at Cuesta in 2019, he began his career by joining the water polo team, earning a spot on both the all-Western State Conference First Team in the tank and the all-WSC Academic Team in the classroom. Unfortunately, pandemic scrubbed both his first swim season and next water polo seasons, yet Sill kept up with the books and made the Dean's List each semester. Last Spring, Sill returned to competition and earned all-WSC honors for swimming, for both the 200-Breaststroke and 500-Freestyle, as well as in the classroom with another selection to both the Dean's List and the all-WSC Academic Team. He completed his athletic career this past Fall with his second full season of water polo. Sill enjoyed a spectacular season and was honored as the 2021 Western State Conference Water Polo Player of the Year. He was accorded All America First Team recognition, while once again earning all-WSC Academic Honors. Sill completed his three years as a student-athlete as a two-time all-conference pick, along with an all-America selection, in water polo and one season as an all-conference swimmer, while also compiling 3.935 grade-point average and earning all-WSC Academic Honors three times.
Cuesta 2021-22 Hansen Scholar-Athlete Jacob Sill shall represent Cuesta at the Conference and State level as Cuesta College's CCCAA Scholar Award nominee. His nominations will move forward to the conference level in September.
Cuesta has earned more CCCAA Scholar-Athlete Awards than any other community college.
