Poloists Claim 4th Place at 2022 CCCAA State Championship

Men's Water Polo claimed 4th place at the 2022 CCCAA State Water Polo Championships.  The Cougars entered the tournament as the #2-seed from the Southern California Region, but lost both games against the North's entrants.  The Cougars opened the tournament against NorCal Champion West Valley and immediately fell behind the Vikings in the first quarter, 5-2.  The Cougars righted themselves and rallied over the next two periods to enter the fourth quarter down by only one goal, 9-8.  However, the Vikings came out strong for the final quarter and tallied the first four goals of the period to advance to the title game on the strength of a 14-10 victory. Cuesta settled for Saturday's Third Place game against the North's #2-seed Sierra, a team Cuesta bet by eight goals on the season's opening weekend.  In their semi-final, the Wolverines scored the last four goals in a loss to eventual State Champion Golden West, 17-13, but the outcome was never in doubt.  In the consolation game, the Wolverines surprised Cuesta and jumped out to a 9-5 lead at halftime and survived Cuesta's rally after the intermission, to beat the Cougars, 16-13.  The loss marked the Cougars' third straight defeat as they ended the season with a 29-9 overall record.

This season's Cuesta team hit several milestones over the 2022 campaign.  Coach John Marsh earned his 400th career victory and currently sits 5th on the Cuesta College's all-time win list with 425 victories.  The program also earned its 43th consecutive playoff berth, while also claiming its 30th conference title.  The Cougars also reached the CCCAA State Tournament for the first time since 2007 and 9th time in the program's 44-year history.  The team's 29 wins also stand tied with 1985 for the program's third highest win total over those 44 seasons.  All American, All State and All Conference awards shall be announced after the Thanksgiving Holiday.
