Harriers Head to 2021 CCCAA Regional Cross Country Meet

ta Men's and Women's Cross-Country travel to the 2021 CCCAA Southern California Regional Cross-Country Championships this Friday (11/12 PM) at Irvine Regional Park. The Cougars shall wind through the course's hill and pond filled landscape to earn the opportunity to advance to the 2021 California Community College Athletic Association State Cross Country Championship on November 20 at Fresno's Woodward Park.

Women's Cross Country is returning to action after taking 2nd place in the 2021 Western State Conference Finals and boast eight harriers who earned all-conference honors.  The Harriers finished 18th at the 2019 CCCAA State Meet, before the pandemic, and over the program's 44 full seasons they have reached the state finals 16 times, including eight times since Coach Brian Locher took over in 2007.  2021 All-WSC First Team selections Julia Voss (SLO HS) and Dulce Esquivel (SLO HS) lead the team and give the Cougars' a pair of elite runners to challenge at the front of the pack.  Either Voss or Esquivel has led Cougars in each their six races this year, but the rest of the Cuesta pack boasts a lot of depth and talent. 2019 All-WSC Selection Shannon Ferrall (Arroyo Grande HS), Returning Freshman Emily Mathein (Paso Robles HS) and True Freshmen Chloe Denham (Moorpark HS) and Amelia Schell (Paso Robles HS) all earned 2nd team all-WSC, while Freshmen Sierra Dismuke (Visalia) and Madelyn Gonzalez (McFarland HS) were also accorded all-WSC honors.

Men's Cross Country is coming off a 5th place finish at the 2021 WSC Championships, but the harriers are poised to peak in the post-season.  The Cougars have only missed the CCCAA State Championships twice since Coach Locher's first year at the helm.  Prior to Locher, the men had not reached the State Meet as a team since 1981.  Returning Freshmen Luis Cervantes (Santa Maria: Righetti HS) and Jordan Reilly (St Helena HS) both earned all-WSC Second Team accolades this Fall, while Freshmen Xander Mahan (Nipomo HS) and Nicolas Moore (San Andreas) were both accorded all-WSC Honorable Mention.
