Cuesta College Athletics Department is proud to announce this month's selections for the Cuesta Athlete of the Month. This distinct honor recognizes two Cuesta College Athletes each month during the school year who have performed to the highest standards in their sport. Our female selection for February is Infielder Madelyn Mata.

2021 Cuesta Team MVP Madelyn Mata becomes more dominant with each passing season.  Mata came to Cuesta as a Pitcher, but, after splitting the past two seasons in the Circle, she decided this year to concentrate on playing the "hot corner" and powering the Cougars' line-up.  Mata is batting a team-high .469 and has either scored or driven in 31 of the Cougars' 68 runs this season.  Thirteen of her 23 hits have gone for extra-bases, and she is slugging .898 on the season.  She currently leads the State with five triples and ranks in the State's Top 10 for Doubles (8), RBI (20), and Slugging Percentage (.898).  Mata has played only 40 games in her three years with Cuesta Softball, yet trails only former All State Shortstop Bre Ojala, 10 to 8, on the Cougars' all-time career triple list.  

Softball is 8-9 overall and begins Western State Conference play on March 10.
