Cougars Lose Pitching Duel With Moorpark, 4-1

Cuesta hosted Moorpark for a Western State Conference game and gave the 1st place Raiders all they could handle.  Both teams received premier efforts from their starting pitchers for the first six innings.  Cuesta's Jillian Davis (pict) held the Raiders in check for six innings, except for an RBI-groundout in the 3rd, while Moorpark's Lindsay Cowans carried a no-hitter into the final frame.  Moorpark finally broke through in the 7th inning with three, one-out, singles and Davis was lifted from the game. Cowans helped herself on offense by slicing a bloop triple just inside the rightfield line to clear the bases and earn herself some breathing room, 4-0.  Cowans, who had only allowed three base runners in the first six innings, tried to close out her no-hit, shutout in the bottom of the 7th, but with two outs Centerfielder Mara Mazanec (pict) laid a bunt down the third baseline and easily reached first base for the Cougars' first and only hit of the game.  Cowans closed out her shutout with her 13th strikeout of the game to her 1-hitter.  The loss drops the Cougars to 9-15 overall and 1-2 against the WSC, while the Raiders improved to 13-5 overall and 2-0 in the WSC play.

Cuesta travels to play Santa Monica on Thursday (2:30) to continue their WSC schedule.
