Softball Splits Twinbill with San Bernardino Valley

Softball split a non-conference doubleheader against visiting San Bernardino Valley. The Cougars won the opener in an impressive six-inning, run-rule victory, 8-0, but dropped the nightcap, 7-1.  Freshman Righthander Bella Garcia authored a complete game, 3-hit, shutout in the opener, while also returning to close the nightcap with 2.1 scoreless innings as the Cougars and Wolverines split on the day.  Shortstop Reese Tartaglia powered the Cougars the opener, by going 2-for-3, including a pair of doubles, while also scoring once and driving in three runs.  On the day, Centerfielder Emily Valdez, and Catcher Mara Mazanec (pict) were the only Cougars to connect for a hit in each game.  Valdez, who leads off for Cuesta, was 3-for-8, including a double, with three runs scored, while Mazanec was 3-for-6 with a run scored and three stolen bases on the day.  The split keeps the Cougars at .500 for the season with an 11-11 overall record.

The Cougars return to their Western State Conference schedule next Tuesday (1/3 PM) with another doubleheader.  Cuesta travels to Santa Maria for two games against local rival Allan Hancock, including their make-up from March 1.  On Thursday (12/2 PM), the team returns home to host #5 Monterey Peninsula for a non-conference doubleheader.  The Cougars and Lobos have already rescheduled this twinbill twice but remained determined to square off on the diamond.
