Softball Drops Non-conference Twinbill to #11 Fresno City

Cuesta hosted #11 Fresno City for a pair of games in SLO, however the Rams claimed both games, 7-4 and 12-3.  The Cougars fell behind early in the opener and were down, 5-0, halfway through the contest, until pitcher Isabella Garcia finally tamed the Rams' bats as the Cougars attempted a comeback.  Garcia battled back after three unearned runs got through in the 3rd and retired 12 of the next 13 batters she faced as the Cougars' offense swung into action.  Garcia led things off with a single to start the 4th inning and got Cuesta on the board by coming around to score on Kaylynn Gray's Double, while Gray scored on the next play.  Cuesta scored another run in the 5th to pull within two, but Fresno answered with two more runs in the 6th to keep the Cougars at bay.  In the nightcap, both teams scored three runs in the first two innings, but the Rams kept up the pace and slugged their way to a five-inning, run-rule victory, 12-3.  The Cougars managed only three runs in the finale but made them count as they also drew four walks to help them stay in the game. The Rams went on to pound out seven runs their last two at-bats to earn victory, 7-4. The dual setbacks dropped the Cougars to 8-9 on the season.

All-WSC Shortstop Reese Tartaglia (pict) and Pitcher Isabella Garcia tied for the team-high with three hits each on the day. Tartaglia had a hit in each game, while going 3-for-6, including two Doubles, while also driving in three of Cuesta's seven runs. Garcia had all three of her hits, while she was pitching in the first game and went 3-for-6 on the day.

Softball is currently undefeated in Western State Conference play, 1-0, and dives back into the WSC-North schedule next week.  The Cougars host local rival Allan Hancock on Tuesday (2:30) and travel to face Ventura on Thursday (2:30).
