Cougars Split with Reedley on Sophomore Day

Cuesta Softball hosted Reedley for a non-conference doubleheader and celebrated their sophomores on perfect day to play two.  Reedley jumped out early with four runs in the first inning, but the Cougars caught the Tigers by the tail and reeled them in with seven runs over the next four innings.  Reedley took back the lead with another four-spot in the 6th inning, but the Cougars came back in their final at-bat with four runs in the bottom of the seventh to take the game.  Starting Pitcher Isabella Garcia locked down her victory in the pitching circle with her batting. She connected for a walk-off Double to score Pinch-runner Idalia Lopez for the win.  Garcia slugged a game-high three hits, including two doubles, while earning the complete game victory in the pitching circle.  In the nightcap, Reedley jumped out again after pounding out five runs in the top of the 1st inning.  The Cougars pulled within striking distance with five runs in the 6th inning but did not get the clutch hit they needed the next inning.  The game ended with the bases full of Cougars and the tying run at the plate, 11-7.  Garcia did not play in the second game and Outfielder Abigail Haller was the only Cuesta player to enjoy a multi-hit game.  She was 2-for-4 with one run scored and another driven in.  The split left the Cougars with a 19-13 overall record.

Cuesta Softball returns to Western State Conference play this Tuesday (2:30), when they host Ventura.  The Cougars squeaked out a one-run victory, 6-5, in their first meeting with the Pirates on March 14 in Ventura.  The Cougars also posted a 1-0 victory over Santa Barbara City in their first meeting in SLO but face the Vaqueros in Santa Barbara's Pershing Park next Thursday (2:30).  Cuesta is currently a half-game behind loop-leading Moorpark and two games ahead of the rest of the WSC pack with five games left to play.  The top two teams in the WSC-North Division shall receive an automatic playoff berth.
