Women's Basketball Returns to Action at San Mateo

Cuesta Women's Basketball returns for the 2021-22 season with a full schedule and new coach.  The Cougars, played only three games in 2019-20 and two in 2020-21, but have 28 regular season contests scheduled for 2021-22.  Cuesta also has a new, yet familiar face, on the sidelines.  Former Cuesta Men's Assistant and two-time all-conference Guard Casey Blair has stepped in as the third head coach for the Cuesta Women's Basketball program.  Both of the previous coaches, Ed Musolff (425-418/30 yrs) and Ron Barba (129-123/11 yrs) posted winning records over their careers, however the Cougars are searching for their first playoff berth since 2015.  Blair took over the program just a few weeks before the semester, however despite missing the opportunity to recruit he has his Cougars ready for action.  Cuesta opens the season and the Casey Blair-era on the road at San Mateo this Friday (7 PM).  Blair does have three returners to ease his transition.  Guard Julia Carney (SLO HS) returns from the three-game 2019-20 season, while Mary Joe Rodriguez (Delano) and Jadyn Young (Tulare) played both games in 2020-21.   Carney averaged 13.0 points, 3.7 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game during her brief season and Rodriguez and Young both put up solid numbers in their short stint.  Rodriguez averaged 7.5 points and 6.5 boards per game, while Young added 9.5 points.   Blair has also loaded up with local freshmen, including Olivia Missler (Atascadero: Mission Prep), Daisy Hummell (SLO HS) and Sam Watanabe (Arroyo Grande HS) from south of the Cuesta Grade and a quartet of former Paso Robles Bearcats- Hailie Abel (Paso Robles HS), Meadow Ingle (Paso Robles HS) and sisters Janiel Stanko (Paso Robles HS) and Xena Stanko (Paso Robles HS).  Blair also brought in Guard McKenzie Emmons (Fortuna HS) as his only recruit from outside of SLO County.
