Cougars Overcome Slow Start to Claim Initial WSC WIN

Women's Basketball jumped back over .500 after securing the team's first Western State Conference victory of the year with a win over visiting Oxnard, 68-41.  The Cougars, now 8-7 overall and 1-1 in WSC play, started slowly against Oxnard and trailed at the intermission, but found their stroke in the second half.  Cuesta was only 2-for-10 from the field in the first quarter and entered the third quarter trailing the Condors, 21-17.  The Cougars scored only one three-pointer in the first 20 minutes but netted five in the third quarter to take a 36-31 lead going into the fourth.  Cuesta added six more baskets from beyond the arch in the final period, while enjoying their best scoring quarter of the season.  The Cougars' 32 points, including six more three-pointers, in the 4th quarter marked Cuesta's best ten-minute span of the season, despite clearing the bench during the final three minutes of regulation.  Cuesta was led by trio of top scorers- Freshmen Olivia Missler (Atascadero) and Sam Watanabe (Arroyo Grande HS- pict) joined Returning Freshman Julia Carney (SLO HS- pict) as they all scored a game-high 15 points.  Watanabe also dished out a game-high five assists.

The Cougars victory moved them to 1-1 in Western State Conference play and 8-7 overall.  The Cougars are scheduled to host Pierce this Wednesday (7 PM) in another WSC showdown.
