Cuesta College Athletics Department is proud to announce this month's selections for the Cuesta Athlete of the Month. This distinct honor recognizes two Cuesta College Athletes each month during the school year who have performed to the highest standards in their sport. Our female selection for January is Cager Julia Carney.
Returning Freshman Guard Julia Carney continues to impress as the Cougars remain in playoff contention. She averaged 12.7 points during the month of January, including a career-high 23 points in the Cougars win at Oxnard on January 29. On the season Carney leads the team with 11.9 points per game and is third on the team with 4.1 rebounds per contest. Carney began her Cuesta career during the Cougars' aborted, three-game season in 2019-20 and sat out the 2020-21 COVID season. Last month, Women's Basketball played its first Western State Conference games since the 2018-19 campaign.
Women's Basketball is 10-9 on the season and 3-3 against the Western State Conference. In February, the Cougars play six more games against the WSC and are chasing their first playoff berth since 2015.
