Coach Casey Blair's Cougars Fall in Finale to Rival Ventura, 70-34

Women's Basketball entered the last week of the season a game above .500 and with playoff chances still glimmering but were pitted against a pair of Top 20 teams and without services of one of their leading scorers.  The Cougars lost to #7 Moorpark on Wednesday, 77-35, and ended the season against Ventura tonight, 70-34.  Cuesta has not beaten Ventura since February 11, 1995 and the streak of 50-plus games continued tonight.  Cuesta's night was even tougher without one half of their dynamic guard combination, but Freshman Guard Olivia Missler, out since scoring 23 points on February 7, was only able to support her team from the bench.

Instead, Cuesta relied primarily on Returning Freshman Guard Julia Carney to keep them in the game.  The Pirates did everything thing they could to keep the ball out of Carney's hands, but she still scored a game-high 22 points, which represented the bulk Cougars' 34 total team points.  She also led the team in rebounds and tied for the lead in assists.  Carney is still technically a freshman and her 13.7 points per game this season ranks 16th on Cuesta's all-time list, however she could climb higher, if she returns next year.  The Cougars end Coach Casey Blair's first year at the helm with a 12-13 record, which is a testament to his ability as a coach.  Blair agreed to move over from his position as the men's assistant just before school started.  He took over a program that had only played five games since 2019 and has not experienced a playoff berth, while boasting only one winning season, since 2015.  Blair, without time to recruit, molded the Cougars into a potential playoff team and kept them above .500 until the final day of the season.
