Cuesta's Women Cagers Outlasted by Vaqueros, 68-55

Cuesta Women's Basketball controlled the first half of their game against Western State Conference foe Santa Barbara City but ran out of steam in the second half as the Vaqueros pulled away for the victory, 68-55.  The Cougars and Vaqueros both started slowly and by the end of the first quarter, Santa Barbara held a narrow lead, 9-8.  In the second quarter, both teams went on the attack.  The Vaqueros more than doubled their initial output with 21 points, but the Cougars posted the highest scoring quarter of the contest with 24 points and took two-point lead into halftime, 32-30.  The visiting Vaqueros' halftime adjustments turned the tide, and they outscored the Cougars, 23-16, to enter the final frame with a five-point advantage.  Santa Barbara's team depth was on display down the stretch and the Cougars' offense slowed as the Vaqueros locked down the win, 68-55 with a 15-7 advantage in the fourth quarter.  Cuesta Forward Abigail Lacy did not start for the first time this season, however she came off the bench to post team-highs with 18 points and six rebounds, while Point Guard Maria Ferrer Brao (pict) scored 13 points and dished out a game-best five assists.  Santa Barbara city's Isabella Jensen-Williams led all scorers with 37 points.  The loss drops the Cougars to 8-13 on the season and 1-4 in WSC play.

The Cougars are back in action on Wednesday (5 PM) with a men's and women's WSC Doubleheader against LA Pierce in Woodland Hills.  The Cougars' game against the Brahmas concludes their first trip through the WSC Circuit.  Cuesta begins the second round of WSC play on Saturday (3 PM) in Santa Barbara with a re-match against the Vaqueros.
