Women's Basketball Catches Fire After Halftime to Blowout Bakersfield, 65-42

Women's Basketball and visiting Bakersfield traded baskets the entire first half, but the Cougars caught fire after the intermission to run the Renegades, 65-42, out of contention.  Both teams entered the game with a 4-2 record and, while the Cougars took an early 16-12 lead in the first quarter, the contest was knotted at 27-26 at the intermission.  Sophomore Forward Abigail Lacy came off the bench to start the second half and, despite being sent back to sidelines to deal bloody nose, she helped ignite the Cougars' offense with nine points in just a dozen minutes on the floor.  Freshman Guard Reese Pasternik and Sophomore Forward Sydney Howe (pict-L) took over from there and provided the bulk of Cuesta's points as they each posted a double-double on the evening.  Pasternik posted game-highs with 26 points and 13 rebounds, while Howe netted 16 points and grabbed 11 boards.  The Cougars also received an all-time performance from Sophomore Guard Maria Ferrer Brao (pict-R).  Ferrer Brao dished out a game-high eight assists as she orchestrated the Cougars' second half romp.  Her assist total is one short of her career-high but does give her a third game among Cuesta's All Time Top 20.  Ferrer Brao did not just set up other players; she also added six points, four rebounds and two steals to fill up the box score.  The victory moved the Cougars to 5-2 on the season.

Cuesta Women's Basketball is back in action after the Thanksgiving Holiday, when they travel to Santa Cruz to face Cabrillo next Wednesday (7 PM).  The following Saturday (4 PM), the Cougars host Monterey Peninsula for their final home game until Western State Conference play begins on January 13.
