Women Cagers Win Two Up North, Make for the Border for Three More this Weekend

Women's Basketball continues to roll after picking up two more wins last week.  The Cougars went on the road to beat both Reedley, on Wednesday, and Las Positas, in Livermore on Saturday, by identical scores, 82-75.  The victories moved the Cougars to 9-2 on the season, which is the program's best start since opening the 2014-15 with a 10-2 mark.   Both games were in doubt early, but Coach Casey Blair's halftime adjustments led to a pair of second half comebacks on the road.  On Tuesday, Reedley led by a basket at the intermission, but Freshman Guard Karla Lukas knocked down a personal season-high 21 points to lead a quintet of double-digit scoring Cougars.  Freshman Guard Bella Musolff also go into the act with a season-high nine assists, which marked her second stop on Cuesta All Time Top 20 Assist List, as well as the fifth overall by this year's "sharing is caring (and winning)" Cougars.  Three days later the Cougars endured another slow start in Livermore and trailed going into the intermission, 37-35, only to outscore their host, Las Positas, 47-38, after the break.  The Cougars shuffled their line-up against Hawks with Sophomore Maria Ferrer Brao and Freshman Natalie Snider each making their first start of the season.  Ferrer Brao responded with a career-high 21 points, while fellow Sophomore Sydney Howe and Freshman Reese Pasternik posted 20 points as the trio dominated the game.  Pasternik, who came off the bench for the first time this season, also added game-highs with 13 rebounds and five assists.

The Cougars will take most of this week off and return to action on Sunday at the Grossmont Tournament.  Cuesta's three-game schedule in El Cajon begins against Consumnes River on Sunday (7 PM).  On Monday, they face the host Griffins (5 PM) and close against MiraCosta on Tuesday (3 PM).  The Cougars and Consumnes River, 8-1, both earned Top 20 votes in last week's poll, yet remain in the "others" category.  Grossmont has endured a slow start to the 2023-24 campaign and enters its home tournament with a 1-9 mark, while MiraCosta, their Pacific Coast Conference rivals to North, are an even 5-5.
