Cuesta Wrestlers Take 3rd at SEC Tournament- The Brawl is Next

Cuesta Wrestling finished 3rd overall at the 2021 SouthEast Conference Tournament in Lemoore last Saturday.  The Cougars were only 1-4 during their dual schedule against the SEC circuit; however, the Cougars' roster is better suited for tournament competition.  Six Cuesta grapplers earned all-SEC honors on the weekend, including 2021 SEC 165-Champion Humphrey Quirie (Tuolumne).

The Cougars did not compete at the first four weights, including 149 where 2019 all-WSC Wrestler Jacob Yamaguchi (Kapolei, HI) sat out, but they loaded up with eight wrestlers in the next six divisions.  Freshman Sami Barakat (Danville) and 2019 State Qualifier Kai Schaefer (Placerville) both earned all-SEC honors at 157.  Barakat took 2nd place, while Schaefer landed in 3rd.  Quirie rolled to his title and improved to 6-0 since dropping down to 165.  Quirie, who is currently ranked #5 in the State, also had to beat teammate Gabe Carrillo (Simi Valley) in the title bout. The Cougars' earned two more "Silvers" at 174 and 184.  Freshmen Nicolas Banas (San Jose) and Quinn Patrick (Sacramento) both went 1-1 to take second place at 174 and 184, respectively.  Fellow freshmen JT Forbes (San Jose) and Carson Brander (Carrizo Plains: Atascadero HS) rounded out the Cougars' line-up at 184 and 197, but did not place.  The Cougars posted a combined 8-9 team record at the event and are 76-87 in their bouts on the season.
