Cuesta Grapplers Hold Their Own at The Brawl

Cuesta Wrestling finished 5th at the 12-team The Brawl Tournament hosted by East LA last Saturday.  Five of the Cougars' eight grapplers placed at the tournament, including 184-Division Champion Quinn Patrick (Sacramento).  Patrick won the 184-division with a dramatic one-point win in the title bout over 8th-ranked Armando Rodriguez of Palomar.  Three other grapplers also reached the title bout, but all three left with the Silver.  2019 All-SEC selection Jacob Yamaguchi (Kapolei, HI) posted a 2-1 record to take 2nd place at 149 and improved to 12-10 on the year, while 2021 All-SEC Second Teamer Sami Barakat (Danville) earned a bye into the semi-finals, before falling in the title bout for a 1-1 record.  2018 State Place Winner Humphrey Quirie (Tuolumne) lost the title bout at 165 by a single point, 12-11, which snapped his 8-bout winning streak at 165-pounds.  He currently leads the Cougars with a 15-6 record on season.  Teammate and fellow 165-pounder Gabe Carrillo (Simi Valley) lost in the semi-finals to the same opponent as Quirie, Garcen Hayes of Bakersfield, which dashed the hopes for an all Cuesta final bout.  However, Carrillo battled through the other side of the bracket to take 3rd place as the Cougars' fourth place winner at the event.  Overall, the Cuesta octet posted a 10-9 record as a team in East LA.

The Cougars return home to host the 2021 CCCAA Regional Finals in SLO on September 4.
