Cuesta Grapplers Juan Camacho and Humphrey Quirie Sign to NAIA Programs

Former CCCAA State Place Winners Juan Camacho and Humphrey Quirie have signed to wrestle at the four-year level.  Camacho, who sat out this season, shall attend Dickinson State in North Dakota and Quirie has committed to Concordia-Nebraska. Both Camacho's Blue Hawks and Quirie's Bulldogs are a NAIA programs.  The two grapplers have been mainstays in the Cuesta Wrestling room for years, but never competed on the same team or in the same weight class.  Camacho has always wrestled at 285, while Quirie began at 149, before jumping up to 174 this season.

Camacho joined Cuesta's team in 2017 from nearby Paso Robles, while Quirie landed in 2018 from Tuolumne.  In his rookie season, Camacho posted an 8-14 record as the Cougars' second-string Heavyweight and was not part of the Cougars' CCCAA State Meet contingent that finished 18th.  Camacho redshirted in 2018, when Quirie joined the program.  Quirie made an immediate impact as a member of the Cougars' starting line-up.  He earned all-SouthEast Conference (SEC) honors and finished 7th at the 2018 CCCAA State Championship, while posting an 18-14 record.  In 2019, Quirie used his Redshirt season, while Camacho rose to prominence.  Camacho was tabbed as a member of the all-SEC Second Team and marched into the 2019 CCCAA State Championships as a title contender.  He lost to the eventual State Champion in the Semi-finals and settled for 3rd place, while also collecting All American honors.  Camacho finished the season with a 22-9 record and lifted Cuesta to 15th place in the final State Rankings.  Both Camacho and Quirie had to sit out the Covid season in 2020, but this year Quirie built on Camacho's previous Team MVP performance.  Quirie was named to the all-SEC First Team and qualified for his second CCCAA State Meet.  In his return, Quirie moved up a spot for a team-best 6th place, while also leading the Cougars into the State's Top 10 for the first time since 2016.  He finished the season 20-11 overall and moved into the Cougars' all-time Top 20 with 38 career victories.  Both Camacho and Quirie are great competitors, leaders and ambassadors of their sport and, after their Covid-extended tenures at Cuesta, should bring the same leadership and elite grappling to their new programs.
