Grapplers Return to Action with SoCal Regionals

Wrestling has not competed since the SouthEast Conference Tournament on Veteran's Day but hits the mats this Saturday for the 2022 CCCAA Regional Meet in Bakersfield.  The roster for the 12th-ranked Cougars includes eight all-SouthEast Conference place winners, including seven grapplers earning votes in the latest CCCAA State Rankings.

SEC Champion Leon Tippett, at 184, will lead the Cougars into the post-season, along with all-SEC performers Quinn Patrick and Reily Lowry.  Tippett is 12-8 on the year, while Patrick and Lowry are tied for the team lead with 14 wins each.  Patrick placed 7th at the 2021 CCCAA Regional and was a State Alternate at 184, however he has spent this past month competing at 165.  Patrick's big drop should ease the loss of 2021 State Place Winner Sami Barakat.  Barakat finished 5th at the 2021 State Meet and is 13-4 this season but has not been able to overcome a mid-season injury.  Lowry, who will be sandwiched between Patrick and Tippett, has earned 12 of his 14 wins at 174. In the lower divisions, Freshmen Gabriel Rivera (125) and Danny Gonzalez (133) each earned all-SEC Honorable Mention, while Andres Cervantes (125) and Jasun Bautista (149) were both SEC place winners in the lower divisions.  The Cougars will also travel with Heavyweight Sherman Barney and Freshman Henry Catalan Barney placed 6th at the SEC Meet, while Catalan is 4th on the team with 12 wins this season, evenly split between 157 and 165.
