Cuesta Hosts the 2023 CCCAA State Wrestling Championship this Weekend

Cuesta College is once again the host of the CCCAA State Wrestling Championships.  The best wrestlers in the California Community College Athletic Association shall compete at Cuesta's Stork Gymnasium for team and individual dominance this Friday and Saturday.  The first of four sessions is scheduled for 10 AM (until Noon) on Friday, December 8, with a second session starting at 4:30 until 8 AM.  On "Championship Saturday" the elimination rounds will run from 10-2 PM, while the Championship Finals and awards ceremonies are scheduled for 5-9 PM.

Last week, Cuesta finished 10th as a team at the CCCAA Southern California Regional Tournament at Palomar College in San Marcos.  The Cougars advanced two grapplers to the CCCAA State Meet, Freshman Christian Davidson, and Sophomore Andres Cervantes, in the 197 and 125-pound divisions, respectively.  Davidson earned the #1-seed from the Southern California Region after winning all three of his bouts to claim the Regional Title, while Cervantes battled through the consolation bracket with a 3-2 record and earned the 7th-seed.  Davidson and Cervantes were also named to the all-SouthEast Conference Second Team This year, each region may qualify eight wrestlers at each weight, instead of six, so Cervantes booked his ticket, while four of his teammates are on the bubble as alternates. 2022 State Qualifier Reily Lowry (pict) leads a pack of four hopefuls, which includes Ian RodriguezRyan Cramer, and Silas Brailey.
