Cuesta Kickers Earn a Tie with #9 Ventura

Cuesta Women's Soccer salvaged a tie with #9 Ventura in a Western State Conference match, 1-1.  The Pirates have been the class of the Western State Conference since joining in 1996 and have won 14 conference titles, including four in front of a second place Cougars squad.  Ventura entered today's game as a Top 10 team in the State, as well as undefeated and unmatched in the WSC.  Cuesta changed that today.  The Cougars gave the Bucs all they could handle for 90-minutes and earned a tie to snap their own four-game slide.  Both teams went scoreless in the first half as 2019 WSC Goalie of the Year Magaly Avila (Paso Robles HS) earned four saves off Ventura's 15 offerings, while the Cougars missed their lone shot of the initial 45 minutes.  Ventura adjusted and immediately got Forward Alix Triado free to score the first goal of the game just three minutes into the half.  Tirado is currently the CCCAA's fifth leading scorer, but Cuesta locked her down the rest of the half and frustrated the Pirates' attack, while stepping up their own offensive pressure. The Cougars scored the equalizer 17 minutes later when Forward Karina Zumbrun (Arcata HS) connected with a pass from Brenna Canepa (Sonora HS) to even the game.  Freshman Sadie Magpie (Morro Bay HS). after the early goal. kept the nets clean with eight second-half saves.   Cuesta improves to 2-8-1 overall and 1-4-1 in WSC play.

The Cuesta Kickers host Bakersfield next Wednesday (4 PM) in another WSC match.
