Women's Soccer Starts Second Swing with a Shutout

Cuesta Women's Soccer began its second swing through the Western State Conference with a shutout, 3-0, of Oxnard on Friday.  The Cougars win over the Condors marked their highest goal-total since opening day and third defensive shutout of the season.  2019 WSC Goalkeeper of the Year Magaly Avila (Paso Robles HS) went the distance in the nets and recorded 11 saves against the Condors' 14 total shots to earn her first victory of the season. Her stellar play frustrated Oxnard and allowed the Cougars to attack on offense.  Forward Brenna Canepa (Sonora HS) finally scored the game's first goal, off a pass from Karina Zumbrun (Arcata HS), with just over 20 minutes left to play.  Zumbrun, from Mia Ferguson (Fresno), scored the clincher about ten minutes later and Midfielder Taylor Kirk (Atascadero HS) padded the score a minute before the final whistle.  The win moves the Cougars to 3-9-1 overall and 2-4-1 in the WSC, but only one win separates 5th place from 2nd in the conference, so a strong second swing through the WSC could return the Cougars to the post-season for the second straight year.  The WSC is one of the strongest loops in the State and boasts two Top 20 teams, including #9 Ventura, who tied Cuesta last week.
