Trio Leads Cuesta In Women's Swimming Rout Over Rivals

All American Paige Leonard joined freshmen Sofia Swayne and Meghan Abbott to lead the Cougars to victory in today's Western State Conference Mini Meet over rivals Ventura and Allan Hancock.  The trio combined to win eight individual events and helped win all three relays; including two where they made up three of the four legs.  Leonard kicked off the meet with the backstroke leg of the 200-medley relay and was followed by Abbott in the breaststroke and Swayne in the butterfly, before Freshman Tori Blanchard locked down the win in the freestyle.  Abbott then jumped right back in to win the 500-freestyle (5:35.60) and two events later and Leonard followed her with a win in the 200-individual medley (2:19.58).   Swayne earned a longer break; but won the grueling 200-butterfly by 12 seconds (2:21.45). Leonard lost her first race of the year and took 2nd in the 200-backstroke (2:16.89), but Abbott joined three of her water polo teammates to win the 200-free relay (1:57.70) to keep the Cougars in the lead.  Swayne and Abbott each won their second titles in back-to-back races with Swayne taking the 100-individual medley (1:07.48) and Abbott earning her own 12-second victory in the 200-freestyle.  Leonard evened the title count by winning the 100-backstroke (1:02.14), but both Swayne, 100-butterfly (1:04.89), and Abbott, 100-freestyle (:57.54), grabbed another title before the final relay.  The trio was again joined by Blanchard and capped the day with a win in the 400-freestyle relay (3:59.13).

Coming Up- The Cougars shall continue to train hard, before beginning a short taper before the 2021 Western State Conference Championship on May 22.  The WSC Championship, like the Cougars' two previous mini meets, shall also be held at Cuesta College.
