Women's Swimming Six-ing on the WSC Crown

Cuesta College hosts the 2021 Western State Conference Swim & Dive Championships this Saturday (11:30).  The Cougars finished 2nd in their first WSC Mini Meet of the year; but bounced back to win their second and are among the title favorites this weekend.  The Cougars will place most of their title hopes with a trio of standouts. 2018 All American Paige Leonard has had her career marred by injuries and the pandemic, yet she still holds five Cuesta Top 10 marks and is less than a half-second off Jessica Hancher's 1993, 100-backstroke record.  Returner Sofia Swayne has been dominant this season.  She has won all six of her races over the past two meets.  Swayne burst onto the scene in 2020, but had her season cut short by the pandemic.  She hasn't approached her 2020 times this year, but that maybe due to the lack of competition.  Swayne has won all six starts of her starts by an average of seven seconds each.  She should be pushed in the championship meet this weekend and is expected to respond by challenging some Cuesta records.  True Freshman Meghan Abbott missed the first swim meet for water polo, however she also won three individual events and joined Swayne and Leonard for a pair of relay wins on her first day in the lanes.  The trio make up half of Cuesta's six-swimmer roster, but with the talented supporting cast of  Tori Blanchard, Lanni Hardin and, Katelyn Fisher the Cougars should be in the title hunt.
