Women's Swimming Posts Best State Finish Since 1994- 3rd Place

The Cuesta Women's Swim team is a marvel!  The five-woman squad defied logic and expectations to finish 3rd at the 2022 CCCAA State Swim and Dive Championship at East LA last weekend, just behind Orange Coast and Sierra, who brought a combined 31 swimmers.  In fact, the Cougars' Quintet was the smallest team in the Top 18, however all that extra room in the van provided space for some trophies.  The Cougars competed in only 12 of the 18 swimming events, but placed in nine of them, including four event titles.  The Aqua-cats established themselves immediately by winning the first race of the meet and setting a new Cuesta Record in the 200-Freestyle Relay (1:39.24).  Despite their lack of team depth the Cougars made their mark in the relays.  They also won the 800-Freestyle Relay (8:04.89)) to end the second day, while securing the overall team Bronze with a 3rd place in the meet closing 400-Fresstlye Relay.  Individually, Sophomore Annie Bartolome finished second in the meet with 56 individual points, after taking 3rd in the 100-Butterfly (:58.45) and setting two new Cuesta Records as she won both the 100 (:57.35) and 200 (2:05.07) Backstrokes.  Bartolome should earn multiple all-America honors for both her individual events and the relays, but so should Meghan Abbott and Jensen Perry.  Abbott, fresh off a pair of conference titles, was second on the team with 24 individual points, with a 6th place in the 500-Freestyle (5:25.01) and 8th place in the 1650-Freestyle (19:17.44).  Perry faced the most competition on the weekend as she swam in the marquee freestyle events.  She finished 5th in the 200-Freestyle (2:00.24) and added 13th in the 100-Freestyle (:55.88).  Freshmen Anna Kreowski and Chloe Porter rounded out the Cougars' relay squads but did not qualify in the individual events. All three of the Cougars' star swimmers are expected to earn All-America honors, while Kreowski and Porter join them for the relay honors, when final times are merged with the NJCAA to create the nation's Top 16.
