Acosta and Corrigan Shine as Cougars Take 9th at WSC Preview

Cuesta Women's Swim and Dive hit the water last weekend at the season-opening Western State Conference Preview Meet in Ventura.  The Cougars only brought three swimmers this week, so they did not compete in the relay events, which require four competitors.  Sophomore Presley Acosta led the way for the Cougars by trading a relay for a fourth individual event.  Acosta ranks 8th all-time at Cuesta for the 200-breaststroke, however in the WSC Preview she focused on shorter distances and scored 44 points to pace the Cougars.  She took 6th in the shorter 100-breaststroke (1:20.13), while also competing in three freestyle events.  She finished 9th in the 50-free (:28.01), 9th in the 100 (1:01.94) and 7th in the 200 (2:19.39).  Freshman Madison Corrigan was the only other Cougar to score in the meet.  Corrigan scored 33 points in her four events.  She made "big finals" twice with a Top 8 finish in both the 200-Individual Medley (2:35.26) and 100-breaststroke (1:21.65) by earning 7th and 8th place, respectively.  She also added consolation points by finishing 11th in the 100-freestyle (1:02.92) and 14th in the 50-freestyle (:29.24).  Freshman Sydney Gills did not score in any of her three events, but just missed with a 19th place finish in the 100-backstroke (1:38.67)

The Cougars take this week off and are scheduled to compete in their first Western State Conference Mini Meet next Friday (11 AM), February 23, in Bakersfield.
