Women's Track & Field Takes 6th at State Meet for Best State Finish Since 1988

Cuesta Women's Track & Field sent an eight-woman contingent to the 2022 CCCAA State Track & Field Championships and claimed 6th place in the 39-team field.  All eight of the Cougars placed at the meet and combined for 10 podium visits (Top 8).  Leaper Eva Kessler (pict) tied Thrower Makaylie Howell (pict) for the Cougars' top finish, while Howell led the team by scoring six individual points.  They both earned 2022 All-State honors (Top 4). Kessler finished 4th in the High Jump with a leap of 5-1, which tied her with teammate Hannah Quimby, but Quimby dropped to 5th place on misses. Kessler cleared 5-3 earlier in the season and ranks 6th all time at Cuesta for the event, while Quimby equaled her best mark and is tied for 10th.  Howell finished 4th in the Discus (130-2) and 8th in the Shot Put (36-9) to claim the team points lead.  Neither mark equaled her season-best, where she ranks 3rd (133-9) and 5th (39-4.5) all time at Cuesta, respectively.  Fellow Thrower Natalia Delgado finished ahead of the Howell in the Shot Put (38-2.25), while also taking 10th in the Hammer (128-3).  Heptathlete Savannah Shoemaker scored in two events.  She finished 7th in the Heptathlon with 3,750 points and 5th as an individual in the Javelin (113-0).  She currently ranks 3rd all time at Cuesta for the Heptathlon and 4th in the Javelin.  Pole Vaulter Elen Zhu rounded out the Field events with an 11th place finish in the Pole Vault.  She was one of the State favorites but fell two feet short of her season-best mark.  On the track, Harriers Julia Voss and Dulce Esquivel both competed in two events.  Voss posted a pair of scoring runs by coming in 6th place in the 10,000-meters (39:36.81) and 7th in the 1,500m (5:02.50).  Esquivel outpaced Voss with a 5th place finish in the metric-mile (4:58.45) but missed the podium with a 9th place finish in the 800m (2:29.61).

This season marked Cuesta Women's Track & Field's best complete season since 1988, when the Cougars won a conference title and finished 3rd at the CCCAA State Championships.  The Cougars' 2nd place finish in the WSC this season, excusing their 2021 Covid title, marked only the second time they had come that close to a conference title since 1988, while their 6th place finish tied 1989 as the program's top State Meet finish since 1988.
