This distinct honor recognizes two Cuesta College Athletes each month during the school year who have performed to the highest standards in their sport. Our female selection for May is Thrower Makaylie Howell.
Thrower Makaylie Howell led the Cougars to their highest finish at the CCCAA State Championships since 1988 by scoring in two events. Howell finished 4th in the Discus (130-2) and 8th in the Shot Put (36-9), while leading the team in scoring with six individual points. Her finish in the Discus also earned her 2022 All-State Honors in the event. Howell is one of the most accomplished Throwers in Cuesta History. She ranks 3rd all time in the Discus (133-9.5) and 5th in the Shot Put (39-4.5), while ranking just outside the Top 10 for both Hammer and Javelin.
This season marked Cuesta Women's Track & Field's best complete season since 1988. The Cougars' 2nd place finish in the WSC, excusing their 2021 Covid title, marked only the second time they had come that close to a title since taking the crown in 1988, while their 6th place finish also tied 1989 as the program's top State Meet finish since 1988's team Bronze.
