Women's Track & Field Sends Trio to State Meet

Women's Track and Field took 15th at the 2023 CCCAA Regional Meet and qualified only three athletes for the 2023 California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) State Track & Field Championships this Friday and Saturday in Modesto.  The Cougars, who finished 6th at the 2022 State Championships, but had to battle through an improved Southern Region and this year.  The Top 6 marks from each region qualify for the State Meet and Cuesta actually lost athletes that would have easily qualified in the North but failed to qualify among the Top 6 in the South.

Freshman Madeline Scovil will lead the trio as the 4th-seed in the Triple Jump.  Scovil qualified 3rd out of the South with a leap of 37' 6", which is more than five inches short of her season best.   She also just missed qualifying in the Top 6 in the South by two inches with a Long Jump of 17-6.25, which tied for the 4th best in the North.  Scovil's teammate and fellow Leaper Ashley Gose just missed qualifying for the State Meet.  She finished 7th in the South in the Triple Jump (35-11.5) and 8th in the Long Jump (17-6), right behind Scovil.  Her marks would have been 3rd and 6th in the North. (Note: Gose shall compete in the Long Jump this weekend. Two athletes scratched from the event, inlcuding her teammate Scovil.)

Freshman High Jumper Grace Gutierrez (pict) is one of the most consistent jumpers in the State but ended up the 5th-seed out of the South.  She was ranked second in the region coming out of the preliminary meet but fell into a four-way tie for 5th place at the finals.  She advanced in 5th place at 4-11, because she had fewer total misses at the lower heights.

Freshman Middle Distance Runner Elle Casselman hit her taper just right and qualified 6th in the 800-meter run.  Casselman knocked more than two seconds off her previous season-best and moved into the final spot on Cuesta Track & Field's All Time Top 10 at 2:18.26.

The 2022 CCCAA State Track & Field Championships shall be held this Friday and Saturday at Modesto College
