Cuesta College Athletics Department is proud to announce this month's selections for the Cuesta Athlete of the Month. This distinct honor recognizes two Cuesta College Athletes each month during the school year who have performed to the highest standards in their sport. Our female selection for May is Track & Field Star Grace Gutierrez.
Freshman High Jumper Grace Gutierrez saved her best for last with a runner-up finish at the 2023 California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) State Track & Field Championships. Gutierrez consistently cleared five-feet all season, but after a 7th place finish at the CCCAA Regional Finals it looked like her season was over. Luckily, a scratch moved her into the 6th qualifying spot and she made the most of it. Gutierrez was perfect in her first three heights and was locked in a two-person battle for the CCCAA State Title. After already clearing a new season-best of 5'2.25", she missed her final attempt at 5'3.25", while her opponent Neshara Smith of Bakersfield cleared the height on her final jump. Her Silver medal is the highest finish ever for a Cuesta High Jumper.
Cuesta Women's Track & Field finished 13th at the 2023 CCCAA State Track & Field Championships.
