2022-23 Cuesta Outstanding Female Athlete of the Year- Madeline Scovil

In 2003 the Cuesta Athletic Department instituted its first true Athlete of the Year Award.  The coaching staff was encouraged to nominate their best athlete and a committee was created to weigh performance athletic as the highest criteria.  Today Cuesta announced its Outstanding Athletes of the Year for the twenty-first time. The 2022-23 Cuesta Outstanding Female Athlete of the Year is Track & Field Star Madeline Scovil (Arroyo Grande (HS).

Freshman Track Star Madeline Scovil enjoyed an outstanding freshman season for Cuesta Women's Track & Field, which she capped by setting a new Cuesta record and earning all-State honors at the 2023 CCCAA State Championships.  Scovil was the Cougars' top individual point scorer in the season ending championship events, scoring 35 of the team's 95 total points over the final three meets.  Scovil qualified for 2023 CCCAA State Meet in the Triple Jump and Long Jump, but dropped out of the Long Jump to allow her teammate Ashley Gose, who had missed the cut by one spot, to advance and join her at the State Meet.  Scovil's decision to concentrate on the Triple Jump paid off big for the Cougars, as Gose also scored at the State Meet.  In the Triple Jump, her leap of 38-6.75 earned her 4th place in the competition and broke Tee Noble's 1998 school record by almost half-a-foot.  Scovil also soared past her previous best mark by nearly ten inches to garner CCCAA All-State honors and etch her name in the Cuesta record books.  Along with her new school record, she also ranks 6th all time in the Long Jump at 17-6.75, while knocking on the door in three other events.  This season, the freshman Star also owned the Cougars' best mark in the Pole Vault (9-6.75), as well as the team's second-best times in both the 100m (:13.13) and 200m (:29.89).
