Cuesta College Athletics Department is proud to announce this month's selections for the Cuesta Athlete of the Month.  This distinct honor recognizes two Cuesta College Athletes each month during the school year who have performed to the highest standards in their sport.  Our female selection for March is Freshman Leaper Grace Gutierrez

High Jumper Grace Gutierrez took home an individual title at the Moorpark Invitational, while also breaking the Cougars' most unbreakable record with a leap of 5'4.5".  Gutierrez finished 2nd in the State in the High Jump last Spring but was still short of Ella Baston's 1978 Cuesta Record of 5'4".  Baston, who held the record for nearly half a century, was the first Cuesta Athlete to clear 5-4, although her mark was tied by several others.  In 1981, Shelly Chan was the first to equal her mark and was followed by Tee Noble (1998), Michelle Jost (2007), Riley Cooks (2014) and Gutierrez last season.  Gutierrez, a product of Nipomo HS, easily won the competition at Moorpark, but pushed for the record.  She cleared the bar to set the mark and break Cuesta's six-woman tie for the event.

The Cougars end this month with the Western State Conference Championships. The Regional and State Meets begin in May.
