Cuesta Spikers Outlast Citrus in a Four Games, Host NorCal Powers on Sat.

Cuesta Women's Volleyball took down Western State Conference inter-divisional rival Citrus in a dynamic 3-1 victory, despite both teams scoring exactly 95 points on the night.  The Cougars set the stage by jumping out to a 10-6 lead in the opening set and the Owls could only pull within three points before dropping the set, 25-21.  The second set was a little closer, with the Owls tying the game at 20-all and surviving three set-points, before falling, 25-23.  The Cougars' clutch rally to win the second set and take control of the match took a little out of them and, after splitting the first 20 points of the third set, the Owls attacked.  Citrus did not go quietly and posted the most decisive victory of the night, 25-17, to let the Cougars they were not ready to go back to Glendora.  The 4th set was a battle and the Cougars, despite an early lead, could not shake the Owls.  The Cougars kept a two- or three-point buffer until they hit 20 points, and the Owls pounced.  They tied the game at 21-all and served for the game at 24-23, but the Cougars rallied and served for the set at 25-24.  By the end, both teams had served for the set, Citrus once and Cuesta winning on its third match-point, 28-26.   Freshman Outside Hitter Bailey Woodside (pict-L) led the Cougars with 18 kills, while Middle Blocker Julia Olson (pict-R) added eight more as the Cougars improved to 5-6 on the season.

The Spikers are back in action tomorrow when they are joined by Monterey Peninsula, Hartnell and WSC rival Santa Barbara City.  The Cougars and Vaqueros shall put aside their rivalry and save their battles for the Western State Conference schedule, while teaming-up to beat the visiting NorCal foes.  The Cougars open the day at 10 AM against the undefeated Lobos, while #18 Santa Barbara takes on #19 Hartnell. In the second round (Noon), Cuesta goes up against Hartnell, while the Vaqueros take on Monterey Peninsula.
