Spikers Edged by LA MIssion in Five Games to End Streak

Women's Volleyball had been a roll with a recent six-match winning streak, the program's best since they ran off a dozen straight, including an opening round playoff win, in 2007.  The Cougars won their sixth straight on Wednesday, by sweeping Los Angeles Pierce in Woodland Hills (25-10, 25-20, 25-20), but tonight they were edged in five games by Los Angeles Mission on their home floor (25-15, 28-30, 22-25, 25-19, 15-12).  The team formerly known as the Free Spirit, now the Eagles, opened the match strong with a five-point victory in the opening set, but Cuesta battled through a tough second set to even the match (30-28).  Cuesta took control of the match in the crucial third set with another win, 25-22, but were unable to close out the 4th set.  The Cougars jumped out to a 10-7 lead in that set, but the Eagles caught them, and the two teams traded the next 18 points to remain knotted at 19-all.  Unfortunately, that was where the Cougars stalled, and LA Mission closed the set on a six-point run to force a deciding fifth game.  Once again, the two rivals traded points until they were both at an even dozen and three points away from victory.  LA Mission got all three of those points on the next three serves to take the match in a 15-12 decider.  The loss drops the Cougars to 9-7 overall and 1-1 against the WSC.

Cuesta continues its WSC-North Division schedule when they host #5 Ventura next Wednesday (6 PM), but the return to their non-WSC schedule.  On Saturday, the Cougars host their final non-conference games of the regular season when Ohlone (10 AM) and West Hills-Lemoore (2 PM) come to SLO for a tri-meet.   The Renegades and Golden Eagles will also play at Noon.
