Spikers Take Two at home Mini Tournament over Ohlone and Lemoore

Women's Volleyball improved to 12-8 on the season after posting a pair of wins in a home mini-tournament against Ohlone and West Hills-Lemoore.  The Cougars started the day slowly as Ohlone took a two-set lead in the best-of-five match to open play.  The visiting Renegades edged the host Cougars, 25-22, in the first set and outlasted them during overtime in the second set, 32-30, to push within a game of a sweep.  In the third set, Cuesta appeared to be doomed as Ohlone jumped out 10-5, however the Cougars rallied and tied them at 15-all.  The two teams remained knotted over the next ten points until 20-20, when the Cougars made their move.  Cuesta figured out the Renegades and scored five of the next seven points to avoid the sweep, 25-22.  In the fourth set, the Cougars jumped out 15-8, en route to 25-19 win to even the match.  The Cuesta Spikers kept the pedal down in the final set with an early 8-1 lead, before closing out the five-set match, 15-10.  Ohlone salvaged their day in SLO with a split after beating West Hills-Lemoore in the day's sandwich game.  In the nightcap, a rested Cuesta squad took control early against West Hills-Lemoore by taking the first two sets, 25-21 and 25-22, but then the Golden Eagles fought back.  Lemoore broke a 20-20 tie in the third set by claiming five of the last six points to cut the Cougars' lead in half and avoid the sweep, 25-21.  Lemoore kept rolling into the 3rd set with a 19-10 lead, but that is where their efforts stalled.  Cuesta floored 15 of the last 18 points to close the match in four sets, 25-22.  Coach Whitney Meyer remarked, "We showed grit.  It will be great to continue this going into conference."

The Cougars' sweep of the twinbill on their home floor marks their final non-Western State Conference contests of the regular season.  The Spikers boast an 11-6 record outside of the WSC-North Division, 12-8 overall, and enter the heart of their schedule against the circuit next week.  Cuesta is on the road for two WSC matches next week.  The Cougars are at #18 Moorpark and visit #24 Santa Barbara City on Saturday.  Both games are scheduled for a 6 PM start.
